Code of Ethics

My professional code of ethics will be provided and reviewed with each client at the beginning of the coaching relationship. Following are a list of working ethical statements:

I will strive to treat all clients and individuals with the utmost caring, fairness, respect, accountability and honesty through clear dialogue about what these values mean to me and how they will witness my expression of them.

I will protect the client’s right to privacy and the privacy of information confided in me except as otherwise authorized by the client, or as required by law or necessitated by public health and safety.

I will discuss the limits of confidentiality. This will include any and all reporting requirement or ethical interventions. For example, if I believe a client is going to harm themselves or someone else, I will first seek their permission to discuss my concerns and to make a direct referral to a professional of their choice. In the event I believe a client to be in immediate danger to themselves or someone else, and a client does not agree with my assessment of concern or my request to intervene, I am obligated to report my concerns to the appropriate professional; if possible, I will inform the client of these actions. All allegations of abuse of a child are required to be reported by law. All reporting requirements to any third parties will be disclosed, defined and agreed to by the client. I will clearly identify that a coaching relationship is not privileged and a that coach and/or coaching records can be subpoenaed by the courts.

I will recognize the personal, organizational and cultural beliefs relevant to supporting the client. I will identify when there is incongruence between my personal beliefs and those of the clients, where the difference is such that there is a need to evaluate the appropriateness of the coaching/client relationship.

I will be sensitive to, inclusive of and thoughtful about individual diversity, including but not limited to, gender, class, race, sexual orientation, age and geographical differences.

I will allocate, where possible, a portion of my executive coaching practice to scholarship or pro-bono clients.

I will define what I mean by executive coaching and a client-centered approach for the client.

I will strive to ensure mutual understanding and agreement about the coaching/client relationship, deliverables and fee for services through a written agreement which will be the developed, reviewed and acknowledged by the client and myself.

Through feedback and observation, I will regularly assess the benefits of the coaching/client relationship; I will inform the client when I feel they may be better served by another coach or another resource.

To the best of my ability, I will identify my level of coaching competence, and areas of focus and expertise, while not overstating my qualifications or experience.

I will strive to develop and maintain my competency and expertise through continuous personal and professional development.

I will inform a client at the earliest opportunity of a real or perceivable conflict of interest.

These ethical statements are personalized to best fit and articulate my commitment to clients and emphasize my practice standards. I follow the International Coach Federations’ pledge of ethics and standards of conduct. As well, the Ethics Practitioners’ Association of Canada ethical standards are used as a core reference document. I believe ethical standards are necessarily a work in progress, to be continually reviewed, revised and revisited.
